Hadzi Zulfikar Mosque, better known as Tulek Mosque, is located in the Banja Luka neighborhood of Lijeva Novoselija, on the left bank of the Vrbas River. It represents one of the most significant monuments of Islamic cultural heritage in Banja Luka and has been the spiritual center for the residents of this part of the city for centuries.
The name Tulek Mosque comes from the well-known Tulek miller family, who took care of its maintenance and preservation for generations.
The Novoselija settlement began to develop at the end of the 16th century, when families seeking refuge from a plague epidemic settled in the area. Hadzi Zulfikar Mosque was established during this period, although some historical sources state that the current building was erected around 1760 on the site of an older religious structure. For this reason, different data regarding its construction year can be found in the literature.
For more than three centuries, the mosque served as an important gathering place for worshippers and one of the recognizable symbols of Novoselija.
Tulek Mosque belonged to the type of traditional Bosnian mosques with an open porch, a hipped roof, and a wooden minaret. It was built on an almost square foundation, measuring approximately seven by seven meters, with the prayer space and the porch unified under a single roof.
Its simple architecture, harmonious proportions, and use of wood were characteristic of smaller urban mosques from the Ottoman period in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
One interesting fact about Hadzi Zulfikar Mosque is that it did not have its own graveyard, as it was situated on a very small plot of land. Consequently, burials were conducted in the graveyard of the nearby Hadzi Kurd Mosque, which is located not far from Tulek Mosque.
Only one old male tombstone with a turban has been preserved next to the mosque, serving as a reminder of its centuries-old history.
During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Hadži Zulfikar Mosque was burned down on May 17, 1993. The fire destroyed the roof, the wooden minaret, and the porch, while the walls suffered severe damage.
By 2003, the site and remains of the Tulek Mosque were declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, after which its restoration began. The reconstruction was successfully completed, and the restored mosque was ceremonially opened on June 18, 2005, as one of the first post-war mosque restorations in Banja Luka.
Today, the Hadži Zulfikar or Tulek Mosque represents an important part of the cultural and historical heritage of Banja Luka. Located in the peaceful setting of Novoselija, along the Vrbas River and near other historical mosques of Gornji Šeher, it bears witness to the centuries-long development of this part of the city.
For visitors who wish to learn about Islamic architecture and the rich history of Banja Luka, the Tulek Mosque is a worthwhile destination. Its story of origin, destruction, and restoration symbolizes the preservation of cultural heritage and the continuity of religious life in the city.
