Hadži Šaban Mosque

Hadži Šaban Mosque is located in the Desna Novoselija neighborhood of Banja Luka, on the right bank of the Vrbas River. Built during the 17th century, it was one of the significant religious sites in this part of the city. Like many other Banja Luka mosques from the Ottoman period, it served as an important gathering place for the local population and was central to the development of the neighborhood that formed around it.

Although records regarding its founder have not been preserved, the mosque's name is linked to Hadži Šaban, by which this historical site has been known to this day.

Architecture of Hadži Šaban Mosque

Hadži Šaban Mosque belonged to the type of single-room Bosnian mosques with a hipped roof and a wooden minaret.  Significance for Desna Novoselija

 Demolition and Reconstruction of the Mosque

 During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hadži Šaban Mosque was demolished on July 14, 1993. Its destruction represented the loss of one of the valuable historical sites of Desna Novoselija and was part of the wider destruction of Banja Luka's cultural heritage. 

After the war, the reconstruction of the mosque began, and the work was completed a few years later. The restored Hadži Šaban Mosque was officially opened in 2004, thereby restoring the religious and cultural function of this historical site.
