Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos

The Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in Rebrovac is one of the most significant Orthodox shrines in Banja Luka and one of the oldest temples in the city. Located in the Rebrovac neighborhood, on the eastern side of Banja Luka, this temple has stood for over two centuries as a testament to the perseverance of the Orthodox people, their faith, and their struggle to preserve their spiritual identity through difficult historical circumstances.

Dedicated to the feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos (Little Lady's Day), the church is today the seat of the Rebrovac parish and one of the most recognizable symbols of the Orthodox heritage of Banja Luka.

History of the Rebrovac Parish

The Rebrovac parish is among the oldest Orthodox parishes in the Banja Luka region. At the end of the 19th century, it comprised about 250 households and more than 1,300 believers, which testifies to the great importance it held for the Orthodox population of Banja Luka at that time.

On the site of today's temple, a wooden church existed as early as the 18th century, known as the Rebrovac Church, which served as the main place of worship for Orthodox believers from the city and surrounding villages. During the uprising of 1875–1878, the temple was burned down, and along with it, church books, liturgical items, and valuable archival materials were destroyed.

Restoration of the Temple and the Perseverance of the People

The history of the Rebrovac Church is a special testament to the perseverance of the Orthodox people. As early as 1798, the residents of Rebrovac requested permission from the Ottoman authorities of the time to restore the dilapidated wooden church. After an inspection by a commission, restoration was permitted, but strictly within its existing dimensions, without any expansion, which was a common condition for the construction of Orthodox places of worship at that time.

After the old church burned down during the uprising, a decision was made to build a new temple of solid materials on the same site. Construction began in 1885, and the renowned builder Antun Cerović was in charge of the work, with the great dedication of Archpriest Vid Kovačević and the parish priest at the time, Milan Marijanović.

Consecration of the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos

The new temple was solemnly consecrated on October 1, 1889 (according to the old calendar), on the feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos. The consecration was performed by the Metropolitan of Dabar-Bosnia Georgije Nikolajević, with the concelebration of a large number of priests and the presence of about 3,000 believers, which at the time was one of the largest church gatherings in the Bosanska Krajina region.

The ceremony was marked by a procession around the temple, the consecration of the altar, a Holy Hierarchical Liturgy, and a public gathering, with representatives of church and state authorities, as well as numerous prominent citizens of Banja Luka, participating in the celebration.

Architecture and significance of the temple

The church was built of solid materials in the spirit of traditional Serbian church architecture of the late 19th century. Over the decades, it has become one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Rebrovac neighborhood and an important spiritual center for Orthodox believers.

Following the devastating earthquake that struck Banja Luka in 1969, the temple suffered significant damage, but it was fully restored and reopened for worship by 1972.

Spiritual life of the Rebrovac parish

The Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God remains an active place of prayer, worship, and gathering for Orthodox believers today. The temple regularly hosts Holy Liturgies, vespers, baptisms, weddings, memorial services, and other church rites.

The parish actively nurtures Orthodox tradition, preserves its rich historical heritage, and brings together believers of all generations, serving as an important part of the spiritual life of Banja Luka.

Temple Patronal Feast – Mala Gospojina

The temple is dedicated to the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, a feast day that the Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates on September 21st according to the new calendar (September 8th according to the old calendar). This holiday is popularly known as Mala Gospojina and is one of the most significant feasts dedicated to the Mother of God.

On that day, a solemn hierarchical or festive liturgy is held at the Rebrovac temple, followed by a procession around the church and a communal celebration for the faithful.

Today, the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God in Rebrovac is not only one of the oldest Orthodox places of worship in Banja Luka, but also a witness to the turbulent history of the city and the people who have preserved their faith through the centuries. From the first wooden church, through restorations under Ottoman rule and the construction of the current temple in the late 19th century, to the reconstruction after the earthquake, the Rebrovac church has remained a symbol of perseverance, unity, and spiritual strength.

For visitors to Banja Luka, it is an essential Orthodox landmark and a valuable piece of cultural and historical heritage, while for the faithful, it remains a place of prayer, gathering, and the preservation of Orthodox tradition for over two centuries.
