The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Karanovac, located in a quiet village near Banja Luka, is one of the most special holy places of the Diocese of Banja Luka. Consecrated on July 13, 2008 by Bishop Ephraim, this temple was created by the reconstruction of an old stone school building from 1932, thus combining historical tradition and contemporary spiritual life. The peculiarity of the temple is reflected in its unusual architecture — the interior layout resembles the double spaces of early Christianity, where the liturgical part connects with the space for the tables of love. The temple has a size of 17.5 x 6 meters, on the west side it is decorated with a bell tower 21 meters high, while along the east side there is a parish house.

This temple is dedicated to the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, a holiday that symbolizes the protection, love and grace of the Virgin. The special spiritual value of the temple is made up of the precious relics of saints — St. George, Holy Witcher Kosma and Damian, St. Haralampi and St. Petka, donated by the Zocište Monastery from Kosovo and Metohija. Thanks to these shrines, the temple became a place of prayer, forgiveness, harmony and mutual assistance, recognized as a symbol of communion and faith.

The parish of Karanovac consists of the villages of Karanovac, Bastasi, Brda, Ducipolje, Jagare, Klasnik, Desna Novoselija and Topici, and the spiritual care is led by the heretic Siniša Šinik. In addition to the main temple, the parish also houses the burial temple of the Ascension of the Lord in Jagara, consecrated in 2012. The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Karanovac today is not only the spiritual center of the local community, but also an attractive tourist destination for visitors who want to get to know the Orthodox heritage, architectural peculiarities and cultural traditions of the Republic of Srpska.

A visit to this temple provides a unique experience — the peaceful surroundings of the village of Karanovac, a combination of history and faith, and a sense of spiritual closeness through prayer and communion. The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Karanovac is a place that connects past and present, faith and culture, and remains an enduring symbol of love, forgiveness and hope for all believers and visitors.

Cover of the Theotokos

The Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos is one of the great Orthodox holidays, which is celebrated on October 14 and symbolizes the protection, love and grace of the Most Holy Theotokos towards the faithful people. The holiday was created on the basis of traditions from the 10th century, when the Virgin appeared during worship in the Constantinople church of Vlaherni and spread her veil over the gathered people as a sign of protection and hope. Believers believe that the Most Holy Theotokos protects Christians with her prayers and provides spiritual comfort in difficult times. According to church tradition, during the siege of Constantinople, the people gathered for prayer asking for salvation. Then Saint Andrew Yurodivi and his disciple Epiphanius saw the Virgin Mary surrounded by angels and saints praying for the people and spreading her veil — the veil — over those present. This event has remained a symbol of faith, protection and hope through the centuries. Today, the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos is celebrated with solemn liturgies and the gathering of believers, and many temples and monasteries are dedicated precisely to this holiday. In the people it is considered a holiday of peace, communion and spiritual security.
